Reflux is expensive

We took Elijah to the paediatrician ($150) and he thinks that Elijah's reflux and rash are related, i.e. an allergic reaction, most likely to dairy. He gave us a script for DermAid (which in the end didn't need a script) and told us to get QV cream and bath oil as well for the rash (all up $26.30). The medication for the reflux came in tablet form (how stupid is that?) and had to be made into a syrup ($60.95). I guess if he gets better, then it's priceless.

We have to try the meds for two weeks and if they don't work, then I have to go off dairy. Either that or give up breastfeeding and give him soy formula. No thanks. So hopefully this jolly expensive stuff works, because I live on milk, cheese and chocolate!

Oh geez, Helen, not nice! But it's easy enough to go without dairy... also, don't even consider soy formula (I'm sorry, I know I know but I am just REALLY concerned and don't think you've been told the full story about it). There are reams and reams of evidence that suggest soy formula is BAD (and you know I am ethically against dairy, so for me to say this about soy formula is not usual hehe). Humans are mammals and need mammal milk to grow, especially our brains...

If you get desperate, look up Dr Jack Newman. He is a breastfeeding guru, who has helped many many bfing mothers who have refluxy babies. There is no need to stop breastfeeding, because bmilk is the best thing for a reflux bub. Even if you have to give up some foods, it will be worth it! There are things you can take to help predigest the bmilk, etc etc... anyway *hugs* hopefully it's just dairy, and you know it takes a few weeks to leave the system?

Don't worry, there's no way I'm giving up the breastfeeding just for reflux and a rash. It would take a lot more than that to give it up just yet! The good thing is that we've given Elijah one dose of the medicine this morning (while he was particularly upset from wind pain) and it settled him right down. He seems to not have done any massive spews today either, so hopefully this is good news. We'll see how it goes.

WRT to soy formula, as soon as the paed mentioned it, I said I didn't want to use formula at all and wanted to continue bfing, so he shut up about it. :-)
