Another poo incident!
We got home from a futile shopping trip today (futile because I bought nothing when I really need to find shoes to match the dress for this weekend's Christening; who'd have thought finding size 5s would be so hard?) in time for a nappy change.
I hadn't heard a poo. I hadn't felt a poo. I hadn't smelt a poo. So I wasn't expecting a poo.
Of course, there was poo. Lots of poo. And before I could stop him, Elijah had his hand down there in the poo! A fight ensued to keep his pooey hand out of his mouth. Everytime I got the hand clean and started on the main problem area, he got his hand down there again!
Somehow, in the struggle, Elijah got poo all over his change table, legs, arms, hands, shirt, singlet and rattle, not to mention where he got me. Of course when I took the rattle away so he wouldn't put it in his mouth, he objected very strongly. In fact, if he could talk, I'm sure he would have said, "For goodness sake, Mum, I'm a right mess here. The least you could do is let me entertain myself while you attack me with those bum wipes."
Sometimes I wish I had an extra hand or two. That would have helped!

Music lessons good for young brains
A Canadian study, as reported
here by the
Sydney Morning Herald, seems to show that young children that learn to play an instrument have better memories than children that don't and that their brains are "getting wired up differently".
Somehow, given that Bugs has a mother who plays and teaches piano, violin and singing and a father who plays guitar and a smattering of piano/keyboard, has a
djembe and waltzes around the house singing and dancing like life is one great big musical, I don't think this is likely to pose any developmental problems for the lad.
At the very least, we should save a fortune on music lessons.

A poo incident
Yesterday I shouldn't have been on the computer but I just wanted to check a few things before finishing packing the nappy bag to take Elijah out to pick up Daddy and go to our Christening prep.
I should have known better than to use precious time doing something that could have waited for later.
Because right at that moment, Elijah pooed... which wouldn't have been a problem, except it was one of the explosive ones... which came out of the leg hole of both his nappy and cover (he wasn't wearing pants because it was too hot), all over my jeans and onto the computer chair!
Aaaargh! (Elijah thought it an appropriate time to scream as well.)
So then, not only did Bugalugs need a full change (clothes and nappy), I needed to change my whole outfit PLUS clean the chair before we left, as I figured leaving poo on it for too long would be a bad idea. Of course I had no idea how to get poo off an office chair, so I mopped up as much as I could with the chuck cloth I had and posted a question on the
Nappycino forum asking for emergency advice.
Thank God for the internet is all I can say. A prompt reply ensured the mess cleaned up with some wool wash and a bit of elbow grease and we were out of the door about 20 minutes after I was intending to leave. Not bad for the amount of things we had to do!

A crazy day (in a good way)
We held our first nappycino here today over lunch. For those who don't know, a nappycino is a gathering of people to chat over coffee or whatever, with a strong bent towards
Modern Cloth Nappies. We were also discussing
babywearing today as I had invited Kate from
Wild Slings and was buying a ring sling from her, especially for Elijah's upcoming Christening. It was all pretty informal and there was a lot of great food and great conversation.
However, with eight adults, six toddlers and a baby in the house, it was kind of crazy and I realised that our house is so not toddler friendly, despite the efforts I'd made to get it tidy. But it was a lot of fun. I think Elijah could sense that there was something going on as he got no sleep at all in the morning, but didn't seem to be too tired despite that.
Once everyone had left, though, he totally crashed out. What a big day for a little Bugalugs!

That's my boy!

There is no doubt whatsoever that Elijah is my son. Why? Because this is how
I sleep at night!

Mmmm... raspberries
Except these aren't the eating kind. Elijah has figure out how to blow raspberries (loudly!) both with and without his tongue poking out. Best game and funniest thing ever, as far as he's concerned. We think it's pretty cute too.

Napping

As much as I love it when Elijah naps in his cot, it's still so precious when he falls asleep on me. At the moment, he is lying with his head on my chest, snoring. Who cares if I'm uncomfortable? I wouldn't disturb him for the world.

Things Elijah Needs
I've decided to put a list up on the side bar of things Elijah needs. With Christmas coming ever closer, it will help people who are stuck for ideas. Most things are particularly for the warmer weather, but some are developmental toys, etc.

Baby geek chic
Stenciled one-pieces with a difference.
Hmmm, Bugalugs is growing fast. Maybe he needs some of these? Or maybe I shouldn't geek him up
quite so early...

Full blown laughter
Couldn't resist posting this photo as it's the best laughing shot we've got so far. Usually as soon as the camera's up, Elijah stops laughing and looks at it inquisitively. Check out the dimples!

Daddy's home!
I'm not sure whether it's the tone of voice I use, or the combination of sounds in the phrase, "Daddy's home", but Elijah knows what it means now. If I hear the familiar jangle of keys in the door, I tell Elijah, "Daddy's home" and he looks towards the kitchen, where he knows Daddy will appear, with a look of anticipation. As soon as Elijah sees his Daddy, there are big smiles all round. As soon as Daddy is home, Elijah wants nothing more to do with Mummy, and leans towards him with arms outstretched. It's one of the most adorable things in the world.

Cots are for sleeping! part 3
Hooray! We've had two days in a row with at least one successful nap. This means a less cranky Bugalugs and a much happier Mumma.

We aren't the only ones
We aren't the only ones who think Elijah is cute!

Elijah was 1st runner up in an online baby photo competition on
dance.net. Of course, I think he's cuter than the
winner, but then again, I am his mumma.

No! Sleep! 'Til Bedtime!
How appropriate does the
Stutter Rap sound now? We aren't getting any day naps at all now, and Elijah is so overtired that he's unbearable. We literally have No Sleep 'Til Bedtime, where he is an angel and falls asleep without needing to be comforted or, heaven forbid, restrained. All he needs is his routine, and he's off to the land of nod.
I wish it was that easy during the day, but it's becoming increasingly wearing.

Cots are for sleeping! part 2
We're trying out a trick to make Elijah feel more secure in the cot by putting rolled up bassinette blankets and muslin wraps around him, underneath the fitted sheet. It's had some success.

Elijah managed to not get out from under the covers at least, sleeping through until 6:30am. He had a great nap this morning (about 90 minutes) and then a so-so nap of about 25 mins at lunchtime. I tried putting him down in the afternoon, but it was over an hour of alternating between crying and fussing in the cot with me soothing him, me rocking him and him deciding it was play time again. I eventually gave up and got him up for a feed.
So we're not really sure what is the verdict on this new trick at the moment, but we'll give it another day or so before I try another tactic.

Don't Stop Movin' part 2
Elijah is "walking". With assistance, of course! Here, Grandad gives him some support. I guess it's only a matter of time before he can pull himself up and walk unaided.

Cots are for sleeping!
At least cots are supposed to be for sleeping. Elijah seems to think cots are for playing. He'll be showing all his tired signs, practically fall asleep on the way to the cot, then as soon as he's down, grin and giggle and wave his arms about. Consequently, we have an overtired Bugalugs and a stressed Mummy.
He also thinks cots are for practising his gross motor skills, pushing with his feet to get out from under the covers and end up at the other end of the cot. This is day 3 of being in the cot and we haven't had a successful nap or overnight sleep yet.

Kisses
Cutest thing ever! In response to my kisses and raspberries, Elijah tried to kiss me on the cheek this morning! He hasn't quite got the concept though. His version of a kiss? Putting his open mouth against my cheek, smiling and giggling!

Stranger Danger!
In the past couple of days, Elijah has decided that he does NOT want to be looked after by anyone other than his Mummy and Daddy. This was not a problem when his Auntie (Daddy's sister) was here, but it is a real issue when parents of my students watch him while I'm teaching. Two days in a row now, he's screamed blue murder. Today I relented and let him sit on my lap and watch the violinist play. He was calm and interested!
Poor Bugalugs! This is a case of separation anxiety and I'm not really sure how to deal with it.
