Helping?

Hey Mummy, I'll help you pack the Christmas presents.

Hmmm... now how to get this thing open?

Let's try playing with the zip!

Eating us out of house and home

After pretty much refusing to eat for a week, Elijah's appetite is back with a vengeance! In fact, he's now eating about twice as much "grown-up" food as he was before. I keep running out of pre-prepared veggies and fruits from the freezer and have resorted to using the "emergency" store bought baby food more and more. Perhaps another growth spurt is upon us. Or maybe he's just preparing us for when he's a teenager and literally is eating us out of house and home.

At least now he's hungry he isn't quite as picky about what he eats. He's now eating chicken and tuna and only baulked at the lentils I offered him the other day. Everything else is fair game!

Happy Little Vegemite

He is an Aussie through and through. See how much he loves his Vegemite!

Taking an interest in the wider world

Apparently, Elijah wanted to see what the view was like out his window.

Good morning, sunshine!

Just after I had left for work this morning, Mummy heard some noises coming from the nursery. Hoping to catch Bugalugs' new babbling on video, she grabbed the video camera. When she opened the door, this is how she was greeted. Luckily the camera was ready to roll.

It's all happening here

Yesterday we had cruising, today it's crawling: the conventional, one-hand-and-one-leg-at-a-time style of crawling. Are these milestones all supposed to happen at once?

Scary times ahead

Not only is Elijah pulling himself up in the cot, he's now pulling himself up on furniture. Here, Elijah uses the handle on the coffee table drawer to his advantage. He didn't manage to get to standing using the coffee table because he was too distracted by the shiny handle to hold on to the top of the table! Below, Elijah finds something else to utilise: the stereo. Notice how he can climb with a toy in his hand. Also note the lovely sharp corner on the TV table. Daddy will have to do something about that! And here we are, standing! He thinks he is very clever. Look at those legs!

Now this is only half of the story. The reason the times ahead are so scary is that after I took these shots, Elijah proceeded to take a few steps to the right, to hold on to the TV table, and then cruise to the left, to get the stuff on top of the speaker next to the stereo.

I can't believe how near he is to walking. It's too freaky to contemplate! For heaven's sake, he's not even 8 months yet!

Projectile vomiting is not funny

Well here's one thing that doesn't cause Elijah to laugh: projectile vomiting.

I'm not sure whether it's the heat or a mild tummy bug that has caused this latest round. Actually, we haven't had much projectile action since Elijah was really little, so it was a big surprise this morning when we woke to some coughing and spluttering in our bed and awoke just in time for Elijah to projectile vomit all over the sheets, his sleeping bag and me. Nice. Into the machine they go.

At bed time, Elijah, having been fed to sleep, was nodding off in the cot, then decided to roll onto his tummy to get more comfortable. Next thing I know, he's lifted his head and projectile vomited all over the mattress. With that discomfort dealt with, he then put his head back down in the vomit and proceeded to go back to sleep. I quickly moved him and cleaned it up as best I could without changing the sheet. As it was, being moved disturbed him enough that it took ages to get him to resettle. We'll change the sheet tomorrow. I promise.

Conquering another milestone

Elijah was having a crawl (swim) around on the floor while I was teaching a student this morning, having a good time, chewing on some toys that weren't his. Suddenly, I realised he was sitting! He had worked out how to sit himself up. I cheered and clapped, the student cheered and clapped and Elijah looked very pleased with himself, then proceeded to try this new trick as many times as he could until the lesson was over.

What a clever little Bugalugs he is!

Let's do the timewarp again!

It's just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
With your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane,
Let's do the Time Warp again!

Let me put this into context: Elijah has developed a pelvic thrusting movement that he does when he's excited. It's very funny, but also a bit wrong. It's kind of like rocking back and forth on his hands and knees, except he goes MUCH further, pushing his pelvis right down to the floor (or my leg or lap or whatever happens to be there) and snapping it back to the crawling position. He does it with such force and energy, with such a look of utter joy on his face, that you can't help but crack up laughing.

I'll feed myself, thanks

For the last week, Elijah has been gradually going off his solids. At first, I thought he was just being picky and only wanting sweet things, but when he turned down mango (which he loves), I figured there was more to it. I was so sick of the battle to get food into him that at lunch today, I just cut up a slice of toast into fingers and ripped up a cheese slice (something he's never had before) and let him at it. I'm not sure how much he ate, but he was definitely interested in putting it all in his mouth and chewing. You can see some of the bits that he dropped in the bottom of the photo.Sometimes he missed his mouth too!

If only we could be this carefree

Elijah had a large chunk of nappy free time in his portacot today. (The rate he gets around the floor I was worried about carpet burn on his boy bits if I had him out on the floor.) I wasn't sure what was so funny, but for a good ten minutes, he was rolling and crawling around almost in hysterics, kicking his legs and waving his arms in the air like he just didn't care. Apparently nudity is hilarious when you're a baby.

It got me thinking how carefree a baby's life really is, as long as it has a full tummy and knows it is loved. As an adult, it's so hard to laugh for no reason. There are too many things to worry about. It makes me want to be a child again.

Some consistency, please!

I've pretty much given up on Elijah ever sleeping 10-12hrs straight like he used to. All I want now is some consistency. If that means he always wakes at 11pm and needs a resettle, I can cope. Even if it was always a 2am resettle, I could cope, as long as it was just a resettle or a quick feed and then back off to sleep. What I can't cope with is thinking that things have gone back to some semblance of normality, then having it all go pear-shaped again with a 2-hour resettle in the middle of the night.

If he wasn't so darn cute, I'd be terribly cranky today.

Experimenting with plosives

Elijah doesn't babble like most other babies. He does, however, go through phases of sounds he will rehearse. For a while, it was blowing raspberries. Now it's kissy sounds and plosives. He will happily just repeat "p...p...p..." over and over. There is no vowel, just the consonant. The "P" sound appears to be his favourite, but he also rehearses "D", "T" and "B". He likes to use vowels separately and will have a whole conversation with me or his Daddy just with vowels, but consonants must be more serious.

It's not an exaggeration

I always thought that movies exaggerated a child's "poo face" for comic effect. Apparently, it's not an exaggeration. It's good to dispel these myths first hand!

Fun in the sun

We went to the Midwifery Program's Christmas party today: a picnic in the park. I've NEVER seen so many prams in the one place. There would have been nearly 100 babies there! This is Elijah's Harem of girlfriends, pictured here with their yummy mummies. Every time we get together I wonder why we don't do it more often. The bubs had a lovely time crawling over eachother and sharing toys. I discovered though, that Elijah thinks anything he can reach is fair game and should belong to him, even if it is in another baby's mouth at the time!

Elijah has never felt grass before, as we don't have a lawn, we have dead grass, weeds and dirt as a result of the drought. So this picture is his first time ever touching and crawling on grass. He was fascinated with how it felt under his hands and spent a fair amount of time just stroking it with his fingers. Then he found the twigs on the ground and was dangerously close to poking one in his eye, so that was the end of that.
