Recovery time

After a traumatic week, Elijah must have been grateful to arrive back home to his own bed, as he slept for pretty much the whole day today and still went down without a fight at his normal bed time. The poor thing has had so many late nights what with flights, car trips and a (very noisy) wake. In fact only one of the days we were away did not involve some kind of long-distance travel. It's been pretty stressful, but the little trouper has taken it all in his stride.

I'm assuming things will be back to normal tomorrow.

Whatever normal is.

And we're back

We are now back home from an unexpected trip to Queensland for the funeral of Elijah's Great Grandmother.

Tactile bub

We always knew Elijah liked experimenting with different textures: how they felt and especially how they sounded when hit or scraped across other textures. Lately, Elijah's favourite texture seems to be my hair.

He will happily sit next to me or on my lap and run his fingers through my hair. The look of sheer delight on his face as he does it is a sight to behold. He is very gentle, unlike when he is dealing with blocks, pegs, lids and other paraphernalia. I think he understands that it's part of me and that it deserves his respect. It certainly has him in awe.

Sniffles and snuffles

Elijah had a horrid night's sleep last night. We couldn't figure out why he would keep waking up. Eventually it got to the point where he wouldn't be settled and he spent half the night in our bed. It was still fitful sleep even then. I know that I woke up every time he tossed and turned or made a noise.

This morning, his nose is running like a tap. So obviously he couldn't breathe properly last night and that was why he was so upset and unsettled. I just hope I don't catch it this time. I always seem to catch his colds.

The upside? He's down for his second nap today as I type this. No complaints and no fighting. He's obviously decided he needs it. Maybe I should go and nap too.

At least we don't need any batteries.

12 month stats

As of this afternoon:

Weight - 9.76kg
Length - 76cm
HC - 46.4cm

So he's still in size 0, but not for long. Size 0 is supposed to fit up to 10kg and 78cm. Already, his size 0 pants are getting a bit "low-rider" with his cloth bottom.

First Birthday in pictures

We spent the morning at a friend's wedding ceremony, came home for a nap and lunch and then did the present thing. Mid afternoon, we had visitors and cake!

Feed me weird things

Elijah's latest game is feeding me random things including, but not limited to:
  • glossy catalogues
  • stuffed toys
  • wooden blocks
I'm not sure why he does it, but I do know he derives great joy in shoving odd objects in my gob, as you can see below. Every shake of the camera is because Mummy was laughing so hard she could barely even hold the camera, let alone hold it steady.

(yes, I know, great PJs and great bed hair)

These naps are dropping like flies!

Elijah has got it into his head that he only needs one sleep a day now. Who knows how this has happened. Maybe the four-day-weekend we just had is partly to blame? We did have different sleep patterns for those four days.

Anyway, the problem with this is that he still obviously needs two naps! This morning he crashed before 9:30 and then refused to have an afternoon sleep (again!) and so was terribly cranky and overtired. This has been the pattern for almost a week, although on the long weekend, he was having a lunchtime sleep instead of a morning one.

But permanently extending his waking period until after lunch won't work. He can't last that long when he wakes at his usual time (anywhere between 5am and 7am). I tried this on Tuesday and he fell asleep while in the ergo, which is something he hasn't done in months. I'm at a complete loss with how to deal with this behaviour. I've tried all my tricks and everything else I can think of but he keeps fighting his afternoon nap.

On the upside, it doesn't take him long to fall asleep at bedtime. But I think he and I both need him to maintain his two-sleeps-a-day pattern, if only for my sanity!

First steps!

Honest to God first steps. Bugs has been taking experimental staggers here and there, and just before I cam home from work Mummy had been trying to coax him but with only limited success.

Five minutes after I walked through the front door, we were lucky enough to capture this...

Favourite Toys

It's a good thing that we have never gone overboard with toys for Bugs. Below is a happy snap of Elijah's current favourite toy when sitting on the floor in the kitchen/dining area.

Yes, jar lids in an ice cream container. Literally hours of entertainment. First he picks up the container and tips them all out. Then he switches between slowly shoving them around and seeing how far he can move them with one quick flick of the wrist. Then, just to mix things up a little, he'll put a few back in the container, before tipping it up and starting over.

At least it keeps him busy.

Baby found in cupboard

Elijah has discovered a new hiding place.

We haven't put the shelf up yet (that's what he's sitting on) and now I wonder if maybe we should just leave this as a little hidey-hole for him. He can't shut himself in (I already checked), thank goodness. But he does like to take blocks in here and play with them. At least it keeps him from being Destructobaby.

And yes, how old school are we? That is a genuine Nintendo 64 in the alcove. No Playstations or Wiis for this family.

Another round of splish splash!

Hey, watch me splash!

Are you watching, Daddy?

Are you watching, Mummy?

Here I go! Splash!

That was fun! Let's do it again!

Bath time today was the first time Elijah had laughed all day. He'd been such a grumpy-pants after a shocking night. It was nice to finally get a release of all the tension!
